Baiame Aboriginal Cave
THE HISTORY OF THE LAND
The first people of the Singleton area were the aborigines of the Wanaruah tribal area – known as the people of the hills and plains. A culturally and environmentally rich group of people with access to extensive and bounteous provisions for sustaining life.
The Great Spirit of the Wanaruah was Baiame – who came from the rivers of dreaming. He created all things beautiful, the kangaroo, the wallaby, the emu, the goanna and all the animals of the valley. He created the bird, Eaglehawk as the protector of the land.
Baiame is depicted in red ochre in a cave painting at Milbrodale as a large figure with long outspread arms protectively embracing the tribal territory and people of the valley. He has no mouth as Baiame talks from the heart.
The descendants of Wanaruah indigenous people living in the area today are admired and respected for their resilience and fortitude following the enormous impacts of European settlement.
