Broke Fordwich Region
Where peace and tranquility greets you...
The village of Broke is nestled at the base of the Brokenback and Hunter Ranges, on the Wollombi Brook. The massive Yellow Rock escarpment stands guard above and the ranges shelter Broke Fordwich from much of the valleys rainfall. The area has sandy loam with river flat alluvial soil, volcanic soil and pockets of red basalt giving wine producers a variety of soil types including the famous terra rossa.
While, historically, it is one of the oldest wine growing areas in Australia, it is only in the last 30 years that Broke Fordwich has become an important player in the Australian wine industry. In 1997 it was the first sub region of the Hunter Valley to be formally recognised as a separate viticultural area.
Today Broke Fordwich is still making history - more than a quarter of the Hunters wine grape production now comes from the area and Broke Fordwich wines are winning more than their fair share of awards. The region produces some of the best quality grapes in the Hunter Valley and is home to numerous boutique style vineyards and intimate Cellar Doors. A boutique olive industry has also developed in the area and beautiful olive groves dot the landscape giving it a unique feel.
Importantly, Broke Fordwich retains its integrity as a rural community remaining free of large scale development yet offering first class Bed & Breakfast and self catering accommodation, restaurants and cellar doors. Broke Fordwich boasts a Macadamia Farm, an Alpaca farm and Olive Groves selling fantastic local produce.
You will be amazed by the beautiful wildlife you will see. An abundance of kangaroos, wombats and a wonderful range of birds will highlight your visit.
You are assured a warm welcome when you visit Broke Fordwich. The people you meet are the people behind the scenes - the winemakers, vignerons, olive growers and farmers. Proud and passionate about what they do, always willing to discuss the finer points of baume or pruning, they bring such warmth and hospitality to the area that you will find it hard to drag yourself away.
Broke is just minutes from the commercial hub of the Hunter, but when you visit Broke you will feel that you are in a world of your own – where peace and tranquility greet you.
